Great professionalism, funny and is willing to share tips and tricks."

Mille Lacs Perch and Walleye Ice Fishing Report (January 2025)

Excellent ice conditions and perch fishing this season on Mille Lacs! Currently there is plenty of ice on the main lake, I would even recommend buying an auger extension if fishing out of a permanent house. Very cold temps and light snow have created ideal conditions for fish houses and mobility. The perch bite is excellent, with good fishing being reported in many areas of the lake. Over the last couple of weeks, the best fishing I have found has either been in the basin adjacent to deep water mudflats, or on the gravel transitions in about 30'. Either way, deep water seems to be the common factor. On the north end, the deep break has been producing fish as well. On mild weather days when the perch are more aggressive, rattle spoons and minnow heads produced the fastest action. When the temperature drops, our best technique has been quivering tungsten jigs tipped with bugs, about a foot off of the bottom. For the walleyes, let's just say the big fish are well fed this season. We are catching some nice fish each trip on rattle spoons. Occasionally the set lines and shiners will out produce the spoon, which is unusual considering this is the most consistent technique on Mille Lacs. For walleyes, I would recommend finding a spot such as a point on a mudflat. The big key this time of year, is avoiding crowds. It's very important to find a nice quiet spot, and set up for the morning/evening bite. Good Luck Fishing! Ryan Kelly Lagoona Guide Service 651-769-3142 www.fishlagoona.com fishlagoona@gmail.com

Mille Lacs Lake Fishing Report (Mid-Summer Smallmouth Bass, Walleye, and Muskie)

This weeks Mille Lacs Fishing Report details current summer locations and techniques for smallmouth bass, walleye, and muskie. Some of the current conditions on the lake involve higher water levels, bug hatches, and new walleye regulations. By mid August we will be able to keep two walleyes per day, within the slot. It's been a good season for muskies, currently we have been targeting two major patterns. Deep weedlines and open water fish have produced nearly all of our action this season. Bucktails on the weedlines and large crankbaits on the mud flats are two proven techniques in the month of August. We have been encountering a lot of fish in the mid forty inch range, while also moving occasional giants that are well over fifty. The walleye bite has been excellent! Many fish being boated ranging from 14"-24". Getting slot fish shouldn't be too challenging, we are regularly boating multiple 18"-20" fish each day. Bobbers and leeches are one of the best techniques on Mille Lacs, but leadcore and small crankbaits really shine as well during the dog days of summer. Good walleye bites can be found on top of the gravel bars, on the edges of the mudflats, as well as the rock piles both shallow and deep. There seems to be a lot of actively feeding fish in the lake at this time. Mille Lacs continues to be ranked as one of the top bass destinations in the country! The "dog days" of summer can be frustrating for many smallmouth anglers, but often times all that is needed to get back on 'em is a change of technique. Baitfish inundate the main lake every year mid summer, this switch in forage often times goes unnoticed by anglers. Instead of fishing bottom oriented techniques, try fishing minnow style baits. One of the most productive techniques for mid summer smallmouth bass, is the spybait. Good luck fishing and have a great weekend!
